Start with the symptom, not a factory reset. Most extender problems fall into one of four layers: power, the extender-to-router link, the client-to-extender link, or local management. Identify which layer is failing before changing settings.

WiFi extender troubleshooting: start here

A range extender sits between your router and your phones, laptops, TVs or other clients. That means a device can successfully join the extender while the extender itself has lost its upstream connection to the router. The reverse can also happen: the extender can be linked to the router while one client has a saved-password, DHCP or roaming problem. Troubleshooting is faster when you separate those links instead of treating “WiFi not working” as one problem.

1. Check power and the router first

Confirm that the extender is powered and has finished booting. Then connect a phone or computer directly to the main router’s WiFi. If the router connection itself has no internet, fix the router or ISP connection before changing the extender. An extender cannot repair an upstream outage.

If the router works normally, look at the extender’s router-link or connection indicator. Exact LED names and colours vary by model, so use the model guide rather than assuming every NETGEAR extender uses the same light pattern.

2. Extender has power but will not connect to the router

Move the extender temporarily closer to the router. NETGEAR’s placement guidance recommends keeping the extender within the router’s usable wireless range; a midpoint location is a starting point, not a rule if walls, floors or interference weaken the signal. If the extender reconnects when moved closer, placement is the likely cause rather than a setup failure.

3. Connected to the extender but there is no internet

Seeing the extender’s WiFi name only proves that your device can communicate with the extender. It does not prove that the extender still has a working route to the main router. Test the router directly, then check the extender’s router-link status. If the router password, SSID or security mode was recently changed, the extender may need to be reconnected to the updated network.

4. NETGEAR_EXT or the extended network is missing

During initial setup or after a reset, compatible extenders can broadcast a setup network such as NETGEAR_EXT. After configuration, the network name can change or use the router’s name depending on the model and settings. If you expect NETGEAR_EXT but cannot see it, let the extender finish booting, move close to it, refresh the device’s WiFi list and confirm that the extender is actually in its setup/default state.

Do not factory-reset solely because the setup SSID is absent on one phone. First check with another client if available; a stale WiFi scan or saved network profile can affect only one device.

5. MyWiFiExt.net, MyWiFiExt.local or 192.168.1.250 will not open

These are local-management routes, not ordinary public websites. The device you are using normally needs to be connected to the extender’s network, and the extender’s actual IP address can differ from a commonly used setup address after it joins your home network. If a hostname does not resolve, find the extender’s current IP in the router’s connected-device list and use that local address.

6. Understand the LEDs before changing settings

LED labels and colour meanings differ across models and generations. A router-link indicator usually describes the extender’s upstream wireless relationship; a device-link indicator describes a client connection; and a power indicator describes boot or power state. Some models use arrows or combined indicators instead. Always match the light to the exact model guide.

7. When should you reset the extender?

A factory reset is appropriate when you cannot recover administrative access, the extender is being moved to a different network and normal reconnection is not possible, or configuration is badly inconsistent. It should not be the first response to a temporary ISP outage or a single client that cannot connect. A reset removes saved configuration and requires setup again.

8. A practical order of operations

  1. Verify that the main router has working internet.
  2. Confirm that the extender is powered and fully booted.
  3. Check the extender-to-router link and temporarily move the extender closer if needed.
  4. Forget and rejoin the extended network on the affected client.
  5. If the router’s WiFi name or password changed, reconnect the extender to the new settings.
  6. Use the extender’s current local IP if a local hostname does not open.
  7. Check firmware only after basic connectivity is stable.
  8. Factory-reset only when configuration recovery or reconnection has failed.
