NETGEAR_EXT Not Showing in WiFi List
NETGEAR_EXT is commonly used as a factory/setup SSID. After successful setup, the extender may use a different name or share the router SSID, so its absence does not always mean the extender failed.
1. Check power and boot state
A WiFi scan during boot can miss the setup SSID.
- Wait for stable power indication.
- Toggle WiFi off/on on the client.
- Rescan from close range.
2. Determine whether setup already completed
Configured extenders can broadcast _EXT names, custom SSIDs or the same SSID as the router with One WiFi Name.
- Check saved WiFi networks.
- Look for your chosen extended SSID.
- Check router clients for the extender.
3. Test with another device
A stale scan/cache on one phone is easier to prove than a radio failure.
- Rescan from a laptop or second phone.
- Forget old extender entries.
- Restart the client WiFi adapter.
4. Reset only if you need factory setup
If configuration is unknown and no manageable extended network is present, factory reset can restore the onboarding state.
- Use the exact model reset procedure.
- Wait for reboot.
- Rescan for the setup SSID.
5. If no WiFi appears after a confirmed reset
Confirm the reset actually completed and verify the model is expected to advertise a setup SSID.
- Check the power LED.
- Repeat reset only after full boot.
- Use official model documentation if the expected factory state differs.
Frequently asked questions
Should NETGEAR_EXT remain after setup?
Not necessarily. The extended network can be renamed or merged with the router SSID.
Why can my phone not see it but my laptop can?
Client scan caches, band support and adapter state can differ.
Does resetting bring NETGEAR_EXT back?
On models that use NETGEAR_EXT for factory onboarding, a successful reset normally restores the setup state.
