NETGEAR Extender Connected but No Internet

A device can be associated with the extender WiFi while the extender has no usable path to the router or while the router itself has no Internet. The WiFi icon proves only the first local radio link.

Fast diagnosis: Test Internet directly on the main router WiFi first. If the router has no Internet, the extender cannot restore it.

1. Test the upstream Internet

Connect the same phone or laptop directly to the router. This separates an ISP/router outage from an extender-specific fault.

  1. Disconnect from extender WiFi.
  2. Join router WiFi.
  3. Open several sites or run a basic connectivity test.

2. Check router-to-extender link

Use the model’s Router Link, link-rate or arrow indicator. Strong client WiFi to an extender does not compensate for a weak backhaul.

  1. Move the extender closer to the router.
  2. Wait for the link indicator to stabilize.
  3. Reconnect the client and retest.

3. Check IP, gateway and DHCP

A client connected to WiFi but holding a self-assigned or stale address might show no Internet. Reconnecting can trigger a fresh DHCP lease.

  1. Forget the extender WiFi on the client.
  2. Reconnect and re-enter the password.
  3. Verify that the client receives a normal gateway/DNS configuration.

4. Check shared SSID and roaming

With One WiFi Name, a phone may remain attached to a less suitable access point. Toggle WiFi or move closer to force a fresh association during diagnosis.

  1. Disable/re-enable client WiFi.
  2. Test next to the extender.
  3. Compare with a device that is known to work.

5. Reboot before reset

A controlled reboot preserves configuration. Factory reset should be reserved for configuration failures that survive placement and DHCP checks.

  1. Reboot router if its own clients are affected.
  2. Reboot extender.
  3. Reset only if the extender cannot restore a valid router link.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the extender light green but there is no Internet?

Green often describes radio-link quality, not the health of DHCP, DNS, the router WAN or the ISP.

Can DNS cause this?

Yes, but first determine whether the client can reach the router/gateway; DNS is only one layer.

Will factory reset fix no Internet?

Only if bad extender configuration is the cause. It will not repair an upstream router or ISP outage.
