Setup does not usually lock the extender to one outlet
After setup is complete, you can normally unplug the extender and move it to another outlet. Saved network settings are stored on the device, so a normal power cycle is different from a factory reset.
Move it only after setup is verified
Complete setup close enough to the router that the connection is stable. Confirm that a client can join the extended network and reach the internet. Then unplug the extender and move it toward the area that needs coverage.
Wait for the extender to reconnect
After plugging it into the new outlet, allow the device to boot and re-establish its router link. Do not judge the new location immediately. Check the router-link indicator if your model has one, then test from the target area.
If it does not reconnect
Move it one outlet closer to the router and test again. A location can have enough signal for a phone to see the router but still be marginal for stable extender backhaul. If the router’s SSID or password changed since the extender was configured, relocation is not the real issue—the extender needs to be reconnected to the updated network.
Do not reset just to move it
A factory reset removes configuration and is unnecessary for ordinary relocation. Reset only when you need to erase settings or cannot recover the existing configuration. See when and how to reset and placement guidance.
How far should you move it?
Move the extender in stages. After each move, wait for the router link to recover and test from the target room. If client signal improves but throughput drops sharply, you have probably moved beyond the best backhaul point. The optimum location is a compromise between reaching the weak area and retaining a good router signal.
What changes require setup again?
Simply changing the power outlet normally does not require setup again. Changing the router SSID, password or security configuration can. Replacing the router can also require reconnection even when the extender itself has not moved. Diagnose the configuration change separately from the physical move.
