Set Up a WiFi Extender with a WPA3 Router

Check extender firmware and use safe transition settings when an older model cannot join WPA3-only WiFi.

Diagnose and fix the problem

  1. Verify model supportCheck the current manual and firmware notes; many older AC/N extenders do not support WPA3-only security.
  2. Update firmware from the official sourceApply the exact model image before changing router security, with uninterrupted power.
  3. Use WPA2/WPA3 transition mode if supportedA mixed mode can allow compatible older extenders while newer clients continue to use stronger negotiation.
  4. Avoid weakening security permanentlyDo not leave an open network or obsolete WEP setting merely to connect an old extender.
  5. Replace incompatible hardware when necessaryIf WPA3-only operation is required, use a current extender or mesh node that explicitly supports it.
