Brand matching is usually not required
NETGEAR states that its WiFi range extenders are generally universal and compatible with the vast majority of wireless routers. That means an ISP-supplied router can often be extended without replacing it, provided the WiFi settings and security are compatible.
Check the router bands
If the extender supports 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz but the ISP router provides only one of those bands, the extender can only connect using what the router offers. Performance and available setup options can therefore differ from examples that assume a dual-band router.
WPS is optional, not mandatory
If the ISP router has WPS enabled, it can simplify setup on compatible extenders. If WPS is unavailable or disabled, use browser-based setup instead. You do not need to enable WPS permanently just to make an extender work.
Router security and SSID settings
Make sure you know the exact WiFi name and password. Hidden SSIDs, unusual security configurations or band-steering behaviour can make setup less straightforward. Avoid changing the ISP router’s security simply to accommodate an old extender unless you understand the tradeoff.
Placement still determines success
The fact that the router belongs to an ISP does not change radio physics. Place the extender where it still receives a dependable router signal. If it is installed at the edge of coverage, clients can connect to the extender but experience poor throughput or drops.
If setup fails
Try setup without WPS, then use the not-connecting diagnostic. If the ISP router was recently replaced, see reconnecting after a router change.
Common ISP-router complications
ISP routers often enable band steering, combine 2.4 and 5 GHz under one SSID, or use provider-managed firmware. None of those automatically prevents extender use, but they can change what you see during setup. If the extender cannot find the expected band, check the router’s current wireless configuration rather than assuming the brands are incompatible.
Avoid unnecessary router changes
Do not disable modern security or split bands permanently just because a setup attempt failed. First verify the extender model’s supported bands/security and try its browser-based setup method. Any temporary router change used for diagnosis should be documented so you can restore the intended network configuration afterward.
